Video: Gene Simmons Tips Dave Grohl $1 on Stage
At this point in his career, I can’t imagine Dave Grohl has any heroes left that he’s yet to meet. He’s been doing it at a very high level for quite a while, and that’s also, like, his thing, maaaaan… Dave meets everyone, and everyone loves Dave!
But despite last week’s Las Vegas rendezvous likely not being their first encounter, it was a damn good one: Kiss bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons joined the Foo Fighters on stage at their December 2 show, if only for a hot moment, passed a crumpled $1 bill to Grohl, then exited stage right. (We don’t know for a fact that the denomination was one dollar; maybe it was a $20? But it’s funnier if it was a dollar!)
The exchange took place when Foos guitarist Chris Shiflett, who likely spotted Simmons standing side stage, started playing the riff from Kiss’s “Calling Dr. Love.” Grohl then all but begged Simmons to show his face, which he did — albeit with a blue surgical mask covering most of it — as he slowly strolled over to Grohl, handed over the cash from a Covid-safe social distance, and then went back to whence he came.
It was a bizarre moment, but a humorous one, and I find myself wondering if there’s some kind of background to the joke. Regardless, the exchange was captured on fan-filmed video and you can watch it below.
Incidentally, Grohl covered Kiss’s “Rock and Roll All Nite” earlier this week as part of his eight-song Hanukkah Sessions cover series with producer Greg Kurstin.
