Slipknot’s Clown Tears Biceps on Stage (Video), Undergoes Surgery and Misses Festival Show
Any athlete will tell you that injuries are just part of the game, and the older you get the more that reality creeps in. Metal performers are essentially athletes in their own right, and Slipknot in particular, with their frenzied, nine-man assault, have been operating their own sports franchise at an incredibly high level for over two decades.
What I’m saying is that it’s a miracle something like this didn’t happen sooner!
At the band’s Knotfest Los Angeles headlining show last weekend, the band’s co-leader and percussionist, M. Shawn Crahan, aka Clown, tore his biceps muscle clean off the bone. The injury occurred during one of his trademark keg strikes in “Duality,” and he’s shared a 30-second clip of the incident. We’re pretty sure we can spot the injury when he doubles over and grabs his face, although that doesn’t look much different from his usual theatrics… and the guy kept friggin’ playing anyway. Shew.
Clown had surgery this week to correct the issue and is currently at home resting and healing. But he of course had to miss Slipknot’s show at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Florida last night (November 11).
In a post to social media shortly after Slipknot’s Clown-less set ended last night, the percussionist revealed the news along with video of the injury. He explained, in typical Clown-ese:
“Ladies and gentlemen,
“If you look close enough you can pinpoint the exact frame where clown completely tore the bicep tendon from the radial tuberosity with proximal retraction, proximal to the coronoid fossa of the humerus.
“With that being said, you may have realized I was not on stage in Florida with my brothers and my culture tonight. For this fact I am saddened.
“I had surgery today in Los Angeles, everything went great and I am recovering peacefully.
“I can’t express how happy and blessed I am to have been able to come back to touring after all that we as a community have been through the last couple years. And I promise we will see you all very soon. Thank you.
“Hail The Knot????????”
Thankfully Slipknot don’t have any shows scheduled until April of next year so Clown’s got plenty of time to get right. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery!

Slipknot unveiled a brand new song, “The Chapeltown Rag,” last week. They just wrapped up their fall tour with Killswitch Engage, Fever 333 and Code Orange and have been teasing the arrival of a new album they’ve been working on since at least late last year.
