Veil of Maya Scrapped Entire New Album They Recorded in 2019
In May of 2020, in the still-very-scary early days of the pandemic, Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo told The MetalSucks Quarantinecast that eight songs were mostly written and recorded for the band’s next album, which he expected out in early 2021, adding that “heavy is the move” as far as the new material’s sonic direction. If a new album were still coming out this year we’d know by now, so needless to say it ain’t. (The band did release two standalone singles, “Viscera” and “Outrun.”)
Now, in a brief Twitter post, Okubo has revealed that the band decided to scrap an entire album, blaming an unspecified person for tainting the material:
“We made a new album in 2019. Because of the actions of certain individuals, it left a bad taste in our mouth and we didn’t think it was worth salvaging. We have deleted the majority of it and have been recording material that we are more happy with. Now we’re on tour.”
It’s worth noting that Veil of Maya have not undergone any member changes since 2014. Perhaps something is amiss within the band’s business team, or recording personnel, or maybe a member of the band went through a nasty break-up… who knows! But that’s a helluva tease for Marc to drop without expecting any follow-up questions (which journalists will surely give him when it comes time for press on the eventual new album).
A few minutes after the above tweet, Okubo responded to a fan who asked if the two singles the band put out earlier this year were part of the eventual new album or not, and he responded, “A little of both. We will see what happens next” along with a winky emoji.
