Sh*t That Comes out Today: October 1, 2021
Apparently the Bummer album I featured last week actually comes out this week. Sorry about that – shifting digital release dates play havoc with my spreadsheet sometimes and I appreciate your patience. In the meantime, here are five kick ass albums that (hopefully) come out today!
Duel
In Carne Persona (Heavy Psych Sounds)
Duel’s throwback heavy rock barrels down on you like the 18-wheeled antagonist in the Steven Spielberg film from which they may or may not have taken their name. No real attempts at originality from these Texans, just a love of 70s rock and meaty riffs. No complaints here! They sling their Sabbath slabs with some serious swing. Also that is one seriously messed up album cover.
Enslaved
Caravans To The Outer Worlds EP (NB)
KISS claim to be the best, but Enslaved may be the actual best (definitely a push between them and Carcass). This surprise EP brings together every era of the band – black metal, progressive, experimental – into four stunning songs that feel like the natural culmination of everything they’ve tried to do over there 30 year career. No idea if this stylistic chimera points the way towards their next album, but Goddamn, a full length that sounds like this might straight up rip a hole in the fabric of the universe.
Four Stroke Baron
Classics (Prosthetic)
At a bit of a loss how to describe this, but I guess it could be summed up as Torche mixed with Tears For Fears filtered through the mind of Devin Townsend (who did produce Classics)? It’s a pretty insane mix, and also utterly addictive – even though it’s not like a Between the Buried and Me style sound collage, there’s still so much going on that you’ll want to revisit the songs over and over to see what tasty little details you missed. Their previous releases never quite clicked for me but on this one they live up to the album title.
Full Of Hell
Garden of Burning Apparitions (Relapse)
About as far as you can push grind before it just turns into black noise, Full of Hell take their name very literally. Within the absolute onslaught lies some pretty impressive musicianship (some of it even feels like tech death run through a broken tape recorder) and a real open mind towards experimentation. There’s no denying it’ll clear out some ear wax. That just helps you hear all the nuances!
Ministry
Moral Hygiene (NB)
Ignoring the 50s kitsch cover art, Ministry’s 15th album weirdly works better than anything they’ve put out in a while. A lot of that comes from it not sounding as much like Ministry as you’d expect – instead, it reminds me more of bands that influenced them like Killing Joke and bands that they influenced like White Zombie and Godflesh. The song structures still feel like Ministry, but incorporating that wider range of sounds helps Al Jourgensen focus on what the band has always been best at: industrial metal songs that smash their way deep into your brain.
