Zyon Cavalera Says Soulfly Paid Marc Rizzo “A Large Sum of Money in February 2021”
Soulfly drummer Zyon Cavalera (who is also, as you may have guessed from his last name, the son of Soulfly mastermind Max Cavalera and Soulfly manager Gloria Cavalera) has weighed in on the band’s recent split with longtime guitarist Marc Rizzo, alleging that despite Rizzo’s claims, the band did, indeed, offer him support during the pandemic. Furthermore, Zyon says, Rizzo’s anger largely stems from the guitarist’s own failure to take advantage of the governmental programs created to aid people financially during the lockdown.
Writing on Instagram Stories yesterday (August 18), Zyon said:
“This is for anyone who doesn’t understand how the music business works. During the pandemic, independent contractors [most musicians] were able to receive grants and such thru the govt. My band’s guitar player didn’t file that paperwork for some reason and now is trying to drag my family name thru the mud and play the victim. There’s alot of people buying into that.
“Now that the dust is settled if anyone has any questions feel free to DM me LOL.
“Dude got salty cuz he didn’t fill out the paperwork and blamed us for it. And we paid him a large sum of money in February 2021 to record a new record. So how did we not help him thru the pandemic?”
That’s… a valid point. Although whether it was Rizzo’s responsibility to file that paperwork or someone in the Soulfly camp’s comes down to how the guitarist was being designated and paid within the band, until Rizzo says otherwise, we can assume that Zyon is correct and that Rizzo dropped the ball.
Still, Zyon is obviously bothered by all the negative press surrounding the split, because he later wrote “This media shit is not for me, I’m going back into hiding,” and shared this clip from Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back “for all you lil keyboard warriors”:
