Phoebe Bridgers Releases Cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”
Singer/songwriters Phoebe Bridgers has released a cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters.” You can listen below.
Bridgers recently told Apple Music 1 of the cover:
“It was just so fun to take a part in it. I feel like my version almost sounds baroque. Literally, James [Hetfield] does all sorts of weird octave jumps and stuff that I can’t do, and I almost have a Billie Eilish approach of right by the microphone, performing it the opposite of them, which was really fun to lean into.”
She continued:
“I’ve always been a big Metallica fan. I think it’s funny, my intro to them was probably way later than so many people who have always loved them. But when I was a teenager, I went to Outside Lands, and I definitely knew Metallica songs from video games and stuff, but I went to Outside Lands and saw their set and was like, ‘This is a rock band.’ It’s kind of a gateway to metal because they’re so hooky and you can hold onto so much of it and it actually can get stuck in your head. So that’s what I’ve always loved about Metallica is that they don’t shy away from a great hook.”
Bridgers’ cover will appear on The Metallica Blacklist, an album that “celebrates the enduring influence of Metallica with an unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Album cut.” That includes a different cover of “Nothing Else Matters” by Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, and Robert Trujillo, along covers of other Black Album cuts by Corey Taylor, Volbeat, Weezer, Biffy Clyro, Ghost, the Hu, and more.
All profits from every track on The Metallica Blacklist will benefit Metallica’s charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, along with a charity of each artist’s choice.
The collection comes out September 10 and can be pre-ordered here in a variety of formats.
The original “Nothing Else Matters” recently reached a billion views on YouTube. Meanwhile, a reimagined version of the song appears in Disney’s recently released Jungle Cruise movie.
