Video: Metallica’s Hammett and Trujillo Join Jazz Saxophonist Kamasi Washington on Stage
Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo joined jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington on stage this past Sunday, July 18 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to perform the band’s 1991 song, “My Friend Of Misery.”
Washington’s version of “My Friend of Misery” appears on The Metallica Blacklist, an album with 50 such celebrity renditions of songs on The Black Album to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Miley Cyrus, Juanes, St. Vincent, Sam Fender and Jason Isbell are a few of the artists whose Metallica covers from the collection have surfaced so far.
All profits from every track on The Metallica Blacklist will benefit Metallica’s charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, along with a charity of each artist’s choice. You can pre-order the collection here in a variety of formats.

Metallica have been deep in “some pretty serious writing” for their next album since last November. After first floating the idea of working on new music while under quarantine last April, by June Lars Ulrich had revealed that Metallica were, indeed, in writing mode. James and Rob have both said they’ve been busy working on new songs, too, and Kirk Hammett has trumpeted the fact that he has over 600 song ideas recorded (after infamously losing his cell phone with 300+ ideas prior to the sessions for Hardwired). Hetfield stated this past May that the band had ten songs partially written.
