Black Sabbath’s Iommi on Robert Fripp and Wife’s Cover Videos: “They’ve Gone Mad”
King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his wife, musician and actress Toyah Willcox, struck viral gold a few weeks back when their cover of Metallica’s “Enter the Sandman” (how they wrote it) captured the attention of the internet at large. Subsequent versions of songs by Billy Idol, Guns N’ Roses and Joan Jett have also caught on big, in no small part thanks to Willcox’s outfit choices and enthusiastic delivery.
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi caught wind of one of the couple’s covers from a few months back — of his own song, “Paranoid,” — and seems simultaneously tickled and jokingly horrified about the whole endeavor.
Speaking to Heavy Consequence, the progenitor of heavy metal himself said:
“I think they’ve gone mad, actually. I think this lockdown has drove them mental. Oh dear, yeah — somebody had told me about it; in fact, somebody sent it to me, and I had a look at it. They do a thing now regularly, those two, they do a thing online, where they’re acting up.”
I admit, that particular video, which was posted before the whole “Sunday Lunch” series exploded, is quite… well, have a look for yourself below and you’ll understand why Iommi feels the way he does.
