At the Gates at the Studio

At the Gates have been At the ‘Gram sharing photos from Studio Grundle Gröndahl in Stockholm, Sweden, where they’ve begun to record their new album. You can peep the pix below.

This will be their third full-length studio album since reuniting in 2007 (after 2014’s At War with Reality and 2018’s To Drink from the Night Itself), and seventh full-length overall.

Unnecessary Insertion of My Own Personal Opinion: I thought At War with Reality was a blast — I named it the best metal album of 2014, and last year it came in at #19 on MetalSucks’ The 25 Best Metal Albums of 2010 – 2019 industry poll! — and I stand by that sentiment… but To Drink from the Night Itself ultimately made very little impression on me, to such a degree that I never even really felt motivated to revisit it after its initial release (Am I nuts? Is it actually really good?).

I believe there’s such a thing as “reunion sophomore slump” (see: Alice in Chains’ The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here). But I also believe there’s reunion third-release rebound (see: Alice in Chains’ Rainier Fog)! So I’m rooting for At the Gates.

The band’s new album will presumably be released next year. That means there might be a new At the Gates album and a new Carcass album released in 2021. That seemed unthinkable not too long ago. I don’t have a point, I just wanna marvel at the world in which we live.
