Watch: Mr. Bungle Cover Van Halen Live!
MetalSucks co-Head Honcho Axl Rosenberg watched Mr. Bungle’s livestream, The Night He Came Home, last weekend and had nothing but extremely enthusiastic things to say about it. He was sparse on the details, though, not wanting to ruin the surprises that really brought it over the top before the concert’s 72-hour viewing window had expired. Well, it’s now been more than 72 hours, so we’re letting one of those surprises out of the bag!
As you have may gleaned from this article’s headline, Mr. Bungle paid tribute to Eddie Van Halen, which Axl did include in his review via a simple setlist. What you couldn’t have possibly gleaned is how they did it, and it wasn’t in the myriad usual ways so many bands already have, like a cover of “Eruption” or some heartfelt words about Eddie’s influence. No… the band covered two tracks from Women and Children First — not typically one of VH’s most celebrated albums — “Tora! Tora!” and “Loss Of Control.”
The band has shared footage of the “Loss of Control” performance on social media, and it’s absolutely fantastic, Mike Patton absolutely NAILING David Lee Roth’s vocals (he sings them better than DLR, honestly) and Scott Ian riffing away on the single thrashiest song in VH’s catalogue. It’s good stuff… or, as Axl said, thumbs up would recommend.
