Listen to a Preview of a New Cynic Song

0

Cynic guitarist/mastermind Paul Masvidal has been teasing new music from the long-running prog outfit for a year, and in January he let fans hear a short clip of what he’s been working on. But whereas January’s preview was essentially just a bunch of sound effects, today’s is much more substantial: guitars, drums, bass (fretless, of course) and even vocals! It sounds like full-fledged Cynic, in a word. And it sounds fantastic.

Take a listen to the clip below. Masvidal had previously promised new music in 2020, and we certainly hope he can make good on that promise (though we’d forgive him if he can’t, given everything going on in the world at the moment).

Masvidal reached out a settlement over the Cynic name with his former drummer and partner Sein Reinert in 2017. Reinert tragically passed away last year, and while the ultimate cause of his death is still not public knowledge, Reinert’s name returned to the headlines a short while later when his request for organ donation was denied due to his sexual orientation.
