New Petition Asks Richmond, VA to “Erect a GWAR Oderus Urungus Statue in Place of Robert E. Lee Statue”
I’m baffled by the ongoing fight re: whether or not to tear down statues of Confederate “heroes.” Not only were these guys racists, they were, quite literally, losers. And not even noble losers who went down fighting for a worth cause! Just plain old regular losers!!
This being the case, MetalSucks fully endorses tearing these statues down, and we definitely 1,000% support this new petition, which seeks to replace a Robert E. Lee statue in Richmond, VA with one of GWAR’s late, great frontman, Oderus Urungus.
The idea seems to have sprung from a social media post by Danielle Stampe, better known to GWAR fans as “Slymenstra Hymen” (I have no idea what’s up with the carbonite Han Solo part… which is not to say that I disapprove).
The description of the petition and its goal reads:
“Robert E. Lee is a failed war general that supported a racist cause. For too long, the city of Richmond has been displaying statues of him and other loser civil war veterans.
“We the scumdogs of the universe call on the city of Richmond to erect a statue of great local leader Oderus Urungus in its place. While Oderus comes from the planet Scumdogia, he called Richmond his home, working with the local art community and employing local artists and ladies of the night.”
As of this writing, the petition has 281 of the 500 signatures it seeks. I can’t imagine there’s any amount of signatures that would actually result in the city of Richmond erecting an Oderus statue, but, shit, it’s worth a shot, right?
