Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Jay Weinberg Express Solidarity with Protestors
Outspoken Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has remained quiet on social media for the better part of a year now, keeping personal interaction off those platforms while letting a representative promote his personal appearances and band-related activities there.
That changed this weekend, as Taylor returned for a quick one-off tweet to express his support for the protests currently raging across the U.S. in the wake of the senseless murder of George Floyd, a black man, by a Minneapolis police officer. Floyd’s death has reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and renewed calls for criminal justice reform while the protests have led police to show their colors with more brutal, unprovoked attacks against civilians.
Taylor kept it short and to the point, saying:
“Several roads have brought us to this point. Only one road is going to lead us out of here. We HAVE to take the road together. Fight injustice. Fight racism. Fight oppression.”
Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg has also joined the growing number of rock and metal musicians speaking up for racial equality. In a Twitter thread posted yesterday, Weinberg said:
“Black lives matter. Systemic racism exists. White privilege is real. I’m heartbroken to, yet again, witness the oppression and bigotry that Black people in America have consistently endured for centuries — at the hands of a system that’s broken to its very core…
“It’s time to speak up against police brutality and the perpetrators of systemic racism, and to become an ally to those who do not experience the same freedoms that we who share in our white privilege do…
“I’m hopeful that we can use our voices to enact real change. That we can contribute our time, energy, donations, and compassion to fighting for real equality, freedom, and togetherness…
“Educate yourself. Vote. Use your voice. I will.”
