Greg Puciato, former vocalist The Dillinger Escape Plan, has unveiled a new solo track, “Deep Set.” It’s the second single — after “Fire for Water” — from his debut solo album, Child Soldier, and it’s a little bit more straightforward/ easier to digest/ however you wanna put it than its predecessor.

Which isn’t to say it’s exactly wimpy. Dominated by a raptorial bass line and sloppy, stripped-down guitars, “Deep Set” has got a real ’90s alt-rock vibe about it. That’s not surprising — the influence on Puciato of bands like Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails has been apparent for some time — but this sounds more like a catchier, heavier, more nefarious version of The Jesus Lizard or Scratch Acid or something like that. The contrast between the two songs suggests that Child Soldier is gonna have a variety of sounds, which is always a good thing.

Check out “Deep Set” below. Child Soldier, which features drums by ex-DEP skinsman Chris Pennie, should be out sometime this summer on Puciato’s own Federal Prisoner label.
