Video: Over 100 Iron Maiden-Loving Teenage Dirtbags Cover Wheatus Together from Quarantine

A few weeks back, Wheatus announced the #QuaranteenageDirtbag challenge, inviting fans to record video of themselves covering their classic hit, “Teenage Dirtbag.” The band received 106 entries from 16 countries on a variety of different instruments ranging from the standard guitars, drums and vocals to kitchen utensils, and they’ve now made good on their promise to combine them all into one supercut with a surprisingly cohesive video featuring everyone’s performances.

Serious question: I wonder how many folks have gotten into Iron Maiden over the past 20 years because of this song?

Wheatus frontman Brendan B. Brown told Tone Deaf a few years back about the inspiration for the song:

“It came from the summer of 1984 on Long Island, when I was 10 years old. That summer in the woods behind my house, there was a Satanic, drug-induced ritual teen homicide that went down; and the kid who did it was called Ricky Kasso, and he was arrested wearing an AC/DC T-shirt.

“That made all the papers, and the television, obviously; and here I was, 10 years old, walking around with a case full of AC/DC and Iron Maiden and Metallica – and all the parents and the teachers and the cops thought I was some kind of Satan worshipper. So that’s the backdrop for that song.

“I’m effectively saying: ‘Yeah, fuck you if you don’t like it. Just because I like AC/DC doesn’t mean I’m a devil worshipper, and you’re an idiot.’ That’s where it comes from.”

Not to mention the folks in the video — good job, everyone! Also props to whoever edited this clip together… it must’ve been quite the chore.
