Sales of Korn Surgical Masks Drastically Increase in the Wake of the Coronavirus
Will wearing a surgical facemask save you from COVID-19? Well, according to the CDC, no, it won’t:
“CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected. The use of facemasks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).”
Still, that hasn’t stopped Korn fans from stocking up on Korn-branded surgical masks. Yesterday, guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer released an Instagram video of his son, D’Angelo Draxon Shaffer, wearing a mask while advising fans “Don’t get the coronavirus, but get the Korn virus at Korn dot com.” Today, the masks, which go for ten bucks a pop, are completely sold out. In fact, they’re currently one of the best-selling items in the band’s webstore.
While a handful of fans have left comments on the post suggesting that profiting from fear of the coronavirus is in poor taste…
…a few followers have pointed out that the band has actually been selling these masks for awhile.
Of course, you could still argue that exploiting current events in order to push the masks extra-hard is gauche, but even that assertion strikes me as flawed; after all, Korn aren’t pretending that these masks will actually help protect you.
Honestly, I’m surprised more metal bands don’t make surgical masks upon which they can now capitalize. Like, how the heck do Carcass not sell surgical masks? And if there’s a surface in the world upon which one can print a logo, Metallica have done it — how are there no Metallica surgical masks?
