And the Title of the New Carcass Album Is…
…Torn Arteries!
This according to Bill Steer, who tells Australia’s Heavy that the title comes from the adolescence of original Carcass drummer Ken Owen:
“[Ken Owen] had a fictitious band called Torn Arteries and he recorded everything himself in his bedroom — guitar and he’d actually bang on boxes and kind of scream into the mic. And the whole thing was so distorted, it kind of sounded super heavy, even though essentially you were listening to a guy with a Spanish guitar and a couple of boxes. I think Jeff [Walker] appreciates the connection to the past and the fact that it was another Ken Owen classic. So that was his choice, really, and it stuck.”
Owen, in case you somehow don’t know, was unable to rejoin Carcass full-time when they reunited in 2007 due to suffering a brain haemorrhage in 1999, which limited his ability to play drums. Owen has, however, remained tight with the band he helped begin, appearing in reunion promo photos and joining them on stage for brief drum solos at multiple festival appearances between 2008 and 2013. So even though “sweet” isn’t a word we normally associate with Carcass, it is, indeed, sweet that they continue to honor Owen with this album title.
As previously reported, Torn Arteries will be released on August 7. It will be the band’s first album since 2013’s acclaimed reunion record, Surgical Steel, which was named the second-best metal album of the decade in last year’s MetalSucks industry poll.
