Shit That Comes Out Today: October 11th, 2019
It is Friday, my dudes. Whatever that means to you — whether it’s an excuse to get hammered, maybe the start of a much-needed weekend getaway, or even if it’s just another day of benign existence — we’ve got a compendium of the latest heavy tunes to keep you going.
Babymetal
Metal Galaxy (Babymetal Records)
Listen “Shanti Shanti Shanti”
Read the MetalSucks review
Sure, Metal Galaxy is a J-pop album put together by a canny producer with a veritable army of contributors. The collective known as Babymetal never rests on its laurels, though. They keep things fun, catchy, and varied all the way through. The addition of guest stars and international sounds only enhances the experience and gives their patented “kawaii metal” fresh new life. Long live Babymetal and their intergalactic domination!
Toothgrinder
I Am (Spinefarm)
Listen “I Am”
Toothgrinder return with their third album of heavy, emotional, groove-laden hard rock. Earlier this year, we praised the title track thusly: “The strings are thiqq, siqq, and elastiqq, the drums are at once militaristic and full of swing, the anthemic hook is a brain-burrower, the lyrical sentiment is beautiful and empowering, and it gets way epic near the end.” Sounds good, no?
Municipal Waste
The Last Rager (NB)
Listen “Wave of Death”
Any given Municipal Waste album is one keg away from being a party-starter, and as its title implies, The Last Rager is no different. Rager is just an EP — true to the Waste’s character, it plows through four songs in ten minutes. Still, it oughta help tide fans over until the band releases a proper full-length follow-up to 2017’s Slime and Punishment.
Lacuna Coil
Black Anima (Century Media)
Listen “Layers of Time”
Read the MetalSucks review
The endlessly frustrating thing about Lacuna Coil is that they don’t play to their own biggest strengths, like the beautiful melodies and Cristina Scabbia’s effervescent voice. Black Anima contains hooks and dynamic interplay and some really pretty guitar parts, but all that gets buried under crunching nu-metal riffs that were already old when Karmacode came out. It’s well-executed for what it is, which is a Slipknot album. Unfortunately, Slipknot already put out a better Slipknot album this year.
Mortiferum
Disgorged From Psychotic Depths (Profound Lore)
FFO Spectral Voice, Incantation, Autopsy
Listen “Archaic Vision of Despair”
Is it spaghetti? Top Ramen? Butthole? Whatever it is on the cover of Mortiferum’s new death/doom masterpiece, it’s making us hungry!
