Sculpted from the legendary remains of Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot have explored a pretty broad sonic territory throughout their years together. From experimental electro-pop to avant-goth doom metal, it’s always a treat to hear just what kind of aural delights the creative genii have in store. Their latest, Blasphemy, takes a nose dive into post-rock land and polishes it up with surreal vocal harmonies and ethereal, textured art-house aesthetics. Mystical themes permeate the record, drawn from an allegorical story by collaborator and former Maudlin of the Well member Jason Byron. “It explores greed, especially politically, and surrounds three characters on their search for treasures; only to be destroyed by the very treasure they sought – a sleeping girl with terrible power named Blasphemy. ”

Bongs of Praise (self-released)

It doesn’t get much better than good ol’ fashined weed smoking music. “This is not doom. This is not sludge. This is Gurt.” Smoke-laced riffs are tinged with blues and southern sludge vibes for all your blazing needs, so light one up and lose yourself in the fuzz. . . then, get a load of that fucking cover art. I’m dying.
Krallice

If you’ve never experienced the thrill of Krallice’s live performance, then you’re missing out and this is as close as you’re gonna get. They are by far the tightest, most well-rehearsed band I’ve seen in my life (though if they did fuck up, I’d be none the wiser), and as far as I know, this is the first collection of live material they’ve ever released. Rot And Waste features various recordings from shows in their home base of NYC from 2009-2012, and while there’s only 4 tracks, it still clocks in at almost an hour. You know how it be.

With all the hype this band has getting, I would’ve never thought that their debut just came out today. To Bathe From The Throat Of Cowardice is next-level ripshit, and the hype is well deserved. Portland’s newest death-dealers Vitriol fuse breakneck technicality with unbearable heavyness in a way that’s entirely their own, brute forcing its way into your consciousness with monstrous, bombastic finesse.

Cairn (Gilead)

The mighty Mizmor returns! The lone ranger behind the project, A.L.N., changed the face of modern metal in 2016 with the monumental Yodh, and his third full-length Cairn smashes the piss out of his previous efforts on all fronts. Intoxicating blackened doom presents an honest, harrowing narrative of its creator as he comes to terms with losing faith in God, peering into the abyss of his own existence and re-examining everything he’s ever known. One of the finest albums released this year, it’s quite bleak, but at its most philosophical points has a bittersweet and humbling edge: “Absurdity is pain and beauty.”
