Shit That Comes Out Today: August 2nd, 2019
It is Friday, my dudes. Whatever that means to you — whether it’s an excuse to get hammered, maybe the start of a much-needed weekend getaway, or even if it’s just another day of benign existence — we’ve got a compendium of the latest heavy tunes to keep you going.
Grima
Will of the Primordial (Naturmacht)
FFO Panopticon, Negura Bunget
Listen “The Shrouded in Darkness”
Lauding Mother Nature’s sublime beauty, but also her wild unpredictability, Grima’s third full length is “based on the worship of the elder forest, its power and magic, where the Grima is a supreme god… a powerful spirit, who protects only those who live in a forest, and punishes everyone who does not respect nature.” Brothers Velhelm and Morbius transforms the expansive wilderness of their Siberian motherland into roaring, poetic atmo-black, harnessing and breathing life into the intrinsic creative potential of their surroundings.
Finsterforst
Zerfall (Napalm)
FFO Moonsorrow,
Listen “Zerfall”
Is this… atmospheric blackened folk power metal? As unbearable as that might sound, this actually isn’t half bad. Until today, I was unfamiliar with this band, but those of you who were already initiated are probably wondering whether Zerfall offers any redemption from Finsterforst’s previous album, the steaming pile of garbage known as #YOLO. In which case, I can assure you it does. This record is chock full of gorious Pagan ballads that are pleasantly sophisticated, employing folksy elements (no accordion this time, unfortunately) as well as huge symphonic highlights. The final track is a whopping 36 minutes long, by the way, so be prepared for an epic voyage of heroic preportions.
Hive
Most Vicious Animal (Seeing Red/Crown and Throne)
FFO His Hero Is Gone, Discharge
Full Album Stream
One of the latest bands to infect the notorious Minneapolis crust scene, Hive’s nihilstic yet high-octane assault thrives in the grey area between despondency and passionate rage. Most Vicious Animal is great for us AD/HD kids who like their music short and to the goddamn point. No frills, no strings attached. Just angry boi moshin’ songs.
Russian Circles
Blood Year (Sargent House)
Listen “Arluck”
Following up 2016’s Guiance, the latest from spacious yet sludgy post-rock giants Russian Circles is a hypnotizing crusher. The band opted to record Blood Year in the same way it’d be played live, layering components bit by bit and forgoing a click track in favor of leaning into their natural “human pulse and unmetered energy.” Impeccable production by Kurt Ballou makes for a very cinematic experience, though I can’t say that the record really stands out against the back of their catalogue. Russian Circles are really digging into their comfort zone, and while it definitely works for them, it doesn’t seem like they intend to move forward with their sound anytime soon…
Carnifex
World War X (Nuclear Blast)
Listen “World War X”
Read the MetalSucks Review
Having never listened to Carnifex before, I went into this record blind, not expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the interweaving of blackened, symphonic, and even electronic elements into the deathcore thread, with just enough breakdowns to keep the slammiest slamheads satisfied. Ear-splitting, flesh-shredding, you know the drill. Vocalist Scott Ian Lewis wants to let you know that “fans are gonna hear a lot of things they haven’t before, but it still sounds like us. We’re trying to push ourselves within what we write, not push ourselves to go beyond our genre.”
