Dave Grohl Watches Nine-Year-Old Drummer Perform Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender”
When I see young prodigies like nine-year-old Yoyoka Soma, who recently appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show for the second time, my thoughts naturally turn to my own offspring, who just turned four, who I can’t imagine plunking out even a simple tune on a piano. That’s totally fine, he’ll take up an instrument some day if he feels like it (we can’t force it!). I bring this up because four is still really young to begin an instrument, but we learn through Ellen that Yoyoka started drumming at two years old! Holy crap! And this kid, filmed at The NAMM Show slaying a drum kit, is also four. The mind boggles.
In any case, what makes Yoyoka’s appearance on Ellen especially endearing, aside from the fact that she’s clearly fantastic at her instrument of choice, is that the show’s producers tracked down Dave Grohl — Yoyoka’s favorite drummer — got him to watch a video of hers, and had him film a special message for her. If she doesn’t seem too enthused, that’s probably because she can’t understand what he’s saying — she doesn’t speak English — but I’ve got to imagine she was screaming on the inside. Watch below.
