Shit that Comes Out Today: October 19, 2018
I’m going to try an experiment this week to get all of you goofballs a little bit more involved in the music that you want to see covered. Here’s how it’s going to go down: You guys can all vote on ONE album coming out next week and I’ll cover it. Rules: 1) Album MUST come out 10/26 (Sorry, no Catharsis), 2) The album with the most up votes wins and duplicate entries won’t count so ctrl + F before you post. I know that’s complicated but I think you all can handle it. Also, shout out to my co-worker, Austin, who read this column a few times without realizing I’m responsible for it. u da bezt :))))
Soulfly
Ritual (Nuclear Blast Entertainment)
On a playlist with Sepultura, Machine Head and Fear Factory
Listen: “Ritual”
The mighty Vince Neilstein said the following about this band, to which I relate to: “Try as I may, I just could never bring myself to care about Soulfly.” I know the two of us aren’t alone in that matter and people mostly just care about this band because Max Cavalera was in Sepultura. By now, you probably know whether you like Soulfly or not and this album probably won’t do anything to change that, even though Axl says that Ritual is their best album to date. For a more in-depth opinion, you can read Axl’s review here.
Internal Bleeding
Corrupting Influence (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with Dying Fetus, Suffocation and Ingested
Listen: “Final Justice”
Internal Bleeding have been through a lot this year in the wake of drummer Bill Tolley’s death. Tolley was a firefighter and died falling five stories off a building in Queens, NY. However, Corrupting Influence is one hell of an album and as far as no-nonsense death metal goes, it doesn’t get much better than Internal Bleeding. This album will rip your head off and fuck your neck hole, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from them.
Shining
Animal (Spinefarm)
On a playlist with pop music and not blackjazz
Listen: “Animal”
I fucking hate the color yellow. I don’t think it should exists and it makes me angry every time I see it. Unrelated, but now you know a little bit more about me. This is probably the most useless blurb I’ll every write since I don’t know much about this band, but in Vince’s words, Animal is a bit of a mixed bag. It takes risks and although some pay off, others don’t. Trying something new is always appreciated, but sometimes it doesn’t land the way it was supposed to. Still, it’s better than sticking to the Disturbed formula. For an actual opinion, read Vince’s review here.
Hatesphere
Reduced To Flesh (Scarlet Records)
On a playlist with The Haunted, Illdisposed and Carnal Forge
Listen: “Corpse of Mankind”
The first thing I thought of upon my initiall listen to Hatesphere was that they sound like a thrash version of August Burns Red, but, ya know, minus the single-layer breakdowns and Christian themes. That’s not an insult. I like August Burns Red (yeah, yeah, I know). The vocals are a bit more varied than what you would find from a typical thrash band and really my only gripe about what I’ve heard so far is that it sounds a little bit unnaturally clean. And hey, maybe they play that way live. I wouldn’t know. But that’s also a minor gripe and shouldn’t turn you away from checking this album out because just like all thrash metal, it’s a lot of fun to drink beer and yell to.
Valdur
Goat Of Iniquity (Bloody Mountain Records)
On a playlist with Lightning Swords of Death, Massemord and Sworn
Listen: “Divine Halls of Obscurity Pt. I”
Honestly, at this point I think black metal bands should be banned from using the word ‘goat’ in their album title, but I’ll give Valdur a pass because they’re fucking awesome. When people say underground black metal, this is the kind of stuff that I think of. It has scorching tremolo riffs, plenty of aggressive melodies and a vocalist that can do more than just high shriek. In fact, the death metal vocals are an awesome touch and I wish more black metal sounded like these guys. So for any rising black metal bands, don’t be afraid to have range in your vocals. There’s more than one way to be kvlt.
