Shit That Comes Out Today: October 5, 2018
Well, my new day job is going beyond well. Training here was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done since it’s difficult to learn sales after being a customer service bitch for so many years. But all the hard work was worth it. I’m no longer stuck in a fucking hole where I problem drink every single night to forget about shitty days, and the amount shit that has changed for me in just a month has been unreal. I know, you’re all depressed that I won’t have as many drunk stories anymore, but there’s a new Behemoth album out today so that should help make up for it.
Behemoth
I Loved You At Your Darkest
On a playlist with Belphegor, Hate and A Hill to Die Upon
Listen: “God = Dog”
I’m not sure what I could even say to hype this album up more than it already is because Behemoth are a fucking hype monster of their own. However, unlike other hype monsters, Behemoth’s shit actually lives up to expectations, which are promptly surpassed and then turned into toilet paper for Nergal to wipe his ass with. The Satanist was one of the best metal albums ever made and easily one of the most important of the decade. ILYAYD has some enormous shoes to fill, but there is no one more capable of filling them than Behemoth. If you’re still reading, you can go listen to the music now.
Withermoth
Monoliths of Misanthropy (EP)
On a playlist with The Black Dahlia Murder, Black Crown Initiate and Rivers of Nihil
Listen: “Sacrilegious Possession”
This EP actually dropped last week, however, vocalist and dear friend Skyler Nohrenberg decided he was too cool to remind me. Some friend, right? Withermoth are the latest of the local Kansas City acts to release a new EP and boy is this this thing killer. This isn’t me just stroking my friend’s ego either. There is a lot of great riffage and songwriting on this EP and the production value is out of this world. Skyler will never give himself enough credit as a vocalist so I have to do it for him because highs are putrid and the lows are clean as fuck. The riffs are juicier than a Minute Maid factory and if you can’t find anything to like on this EP, then you’re probably the type of person who reports memes on Facebook. These dudes worked their asses off on this EP and all the sweat has clearly paid off.
High On Fire
Electric Messiah (eOne Music)
On a playlist with Sleep, Baroness and Motörhead
Listen: “Electric Messiah”
For those of you that have never listened to High on Fire, don’t make the mistake that I did for so many years when I was younger of just assuming that they’re a metalcore band based on their name. I’ve done some pretty dumb shit before, like that week where I referred to Howard Jones as Howard Johnson fucking twice in the same paragraph (#imaposer), but ignoring these guys was probably dumber. High on Fire are a lot of fun to listen to and if you’ve ever heard of a little band called Sleep, then you’re familiar with Matt Pike’s work already. High on Fire are a little more up-tempo than Sleep, but it’s still stoner and sludgy. Give it a listen.
Monuments
Phronesis (Century Media) listen
On a playlist with Periphery, Tesseract and Skyharbor
Listen: “A.W.O.L.”
Hey look, a djent band that isn’t shit. That makes monuments a winner in my book because djent is hands down the most annoying sub-genre of metal, obviously other than metalcore. If you like Periphery then you’ve probably heard of Monuments before and I’d imagine that you probably already like them. For those of you who rolled your eyes when you read the word Periphery, the vocals aren’t as high-pitched as Spencer Sotelo’s so give it a shot and you might like it. Like I said, djent that doesn’t completely suck is pretty rare so get your fill here.
Infestus
Thrypsis (Debemur Morti)
On a playlist with Thorngoth, Rev 16:8 and Membaris
Listen: “Thron aus Trümmern”
Infestus have a very interesting sound. On the surface it might just look like your typical melodic black metal, however, the vocals are much more varied than just your typical blood curdling high shrieks. They range from, well, said high shrieks to mids and even all the way down to the point where they sound almost hardcoreish. Whether you like black metal or not, I would check these guys out because the music doesn’t get boring and it isn’t repetitive enough to get grating, even through a 9-minute song.
