Shit That Comes Out Today: September 28, 2018
Hey. Hi. How’s it going. My computer decided to shit the bed at the 11th hour last night so I’m currently panic finishing this column at my day job on a computer that has so many security restrictions that I can’t even save pictures. As such, I am currently blind linking to a lot of different music under the assumption that I’m finding the right thing because these computers also don’t support YouTube. Fun stuff. So, Axl, sorry about all the missing pictures. I know they’re your favorite part of this whole thing. Anyway, this week is fucking stacked. Enjoy.
Anaal Nathrakh
A New Kind Of Horror (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with Napalm Death, Fukpig and Rotten Sound
Listen: “Forward!”
If you have never listened to Anaal Nathrakh before then I both envy and pity you. I am envious because you get to hear the most beautiful brand of chaos that metal has to offer for the first time and I pity you because fuck, man, you’ve been missing out. A New Kind Of Horror is marketed as the soundtrack to war and that’s immediately obvious from the use of assault rifle fire and shotgun reloading as instruments in “Forward!”. This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year and will probably be the most grindcore thing I ever listen to in my life, even though they implement elements form plenty of other areas of metal.
Revocation
The Outer Ones (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with Soreption, Obscura and Rivers of Nihil
Listen: “The Outer Ones”
This week is fucking stacked, man. It’s basically impossible to not be excited about this album if you’ve ever heard a Revocation song before and boy does this album look like it’s shaping up to be a beast. Even if you don’t like the more technical side of death metal, you owe it to yourself to check out this band because they are an absolute treat in a world of redundant tech death. There’s not a whole lot that I can put into words that can properly describe how fucking awesome The Outer Ones is so quit reading and just listen. Then feel free to tell me how right I was.
Terror
Total Retaliation (Pure Noise Records)
On a playlist with Hatebreed, Lionheart and Madball
Listen: “Spirit of Sacrifice”
Terror have long been one of the only hardcore bands that I like. A lot of you know that I’m a little bit picky with most of the stuff I listen to but I am always down to listen to Terror. They’re nothing if not consistent and have always found ways to keep their music interesting even after being around for quite some time now. It’s hard to argue with the results because Terror fucking rock and if you’re not two-stepping during the ending breakdown of “Spirit of Sacrifice” then I really don’t know if I want to be associated with you. If you two-step to any other type of metal, I also don’t want to be associated with you.
Immortal Guardian
Age Of Revolution (M-Theory Audio)
On a playlist with Age of Artemis, Viathyn and Gladenfold
Listen: “Zephon”
Holy fucking shit, man. Talk about epic and cheesy. That’s not an insult, mind you, it’s a compliment. Immortal Guardian make some seriously epic symphonic power metal that throws in elements from all over the metal spectrum. We have power metal highs and death metal screams on top of keyboards and even some djenty staccato riffs here and there. I’m not sure I’ve heard anything quite this varied before but I’ve gotta say I dig it. It’s a different take on epic metal and it’s definitely something that will interest you if you’re bored of just keyboards and distortion pedals.
Wolfheart
Constellation Of The Black Light (Napalm Records)
On a playlist with Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum and Mors Principium Est
Listen: “Breakwater”
I can’t believe I made it through 5 bands without saying a single mean thing. September is definitely my favorite month for releases. If you’ve ever heard of Before the Dawn, The Final Harvest or Black Sun Aeon, then you’re likely familiar with Tuomas Seaukkonen, whose solo project this is. Woldheart haven’t been around for too terribly long, so you can be forgiven if this is your first exposure, but it almost feels like this album was written specifically for me because it has every fucking element of melodic death metal that I love. The vocals rip, the guitars practically sing to you and there’s plenty of ambience in the riffs to create an atmosphere that will make you want to keep listening. So uhhh, go fucking listen to Wolfheart.
