Shit That Comes Out Today: September 21, 2018
This week is a fun week. All of Kansas City is collectively coming down from a football high since the Chiefs beat the Steelers at home for the first time in 32 years and honestly just the fact that we beat them is good enough. But I digress, this week is a lot slower than the last few weeks but there’s some good shit to listen to, especially the new Aborted record. Oh, and if you guys haven’t Seen the Netflix show I Am A Killer, it’s fucking sweet.
Aborted
TerrorVision(Century Media)
On a playlist with Dying Fetus, Exhumed and Cryptopsy
Listen: “TerrorVision”
Aborted are nothing if not consistent. This band puts out brutal record after brutal record so well that it almost makes you wonder how they haven’t ran out of blast beats and brutality yet. But that’s what makes great death metal bands great. TerrorVision isn’t quite as good as Retrogore, but it’s a pretty good record. Aborted have gone in a bit more of a melodic direction and although resulted in some killer tracks, the experiment ultimately falls a bit short of what could have been. For a more in-depth opinion, you can read my full review here.
Archgoat (9/14)
The Luciferian Crown (Debemur Morti)
On a playlist with Beherit, Satanic Warmaster and Blasphemy
Listen: Full album
So a lot of you were pretty salty that I missed Archgoat last week. I promised I would cover them this week for all you fucks and all I have to say is, really? This is what you all threw such a tantrum about? It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but from all the butthurt, I was expecting something mindblowing rather than some basement quality black metal with vocals that sound like my fiber bar farts. That’s what I get for listening to you guys though. Your taste in music sucks even more than mine and I bumped a Christian metalcore band last week. Let that sink in.
SUMAC
Love In Shadow
On a playlist with Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer and Botch
Listen: “Attis’ Blade”
Sumac aren’t a band for everyone, as is made immediately apparent by the near 16-minute track length of single “Attis’ Blade”. As you all probably know, I am not a patient man. I can’t get into stoner or doom metal because I don’t have the attention span for it and the same principle is applied to this Sumac song. There are going to be plenty of people who fucking love this but if you’re impatient like I am, then this probably won’t be the record for you and that’s okay. Everyone’s feelings are important.
Voivod
The Wake
On a playlist with Megadeth, Prong and Cynic
Listen: “Obsolete Beings”
In my admittedly limited exposure to Voivod, I would describe them as nothing short of awesome. Although certainly softer and definitely a change of pace from my normal diet of melodic death metal, I really enjoy the lighter and warmer sounds mixed with thrash elements. It makes Voivod’s sound unique and rather easy to recognize. The Wake will be Voivod’s first full-length record in 5 years so I can imagine that anticipation for the space-age proggers’ newest venture is riding nice and high right now.
Dragonlord
Dominion
On a playlist with Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore and Sadus
Listen: “Dominion”
I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical about a band named Dragonlord but god fucking damn are these guys good. For anyone who was as underwhelmed by Archgoat as I was, Dragonlord have the release for you. For any fans of Testament, this is Eric Peterson’s other band. As far as the sound goes, Shagrath wishes that this is what the new Dimmu Borgir album sounded like and the influence is unbelievably obvious here. Dragonlord fucking rock and you should listen to Domionion. It’s that simple.
