Shit That Comes Out Today: August 31, 2018
I would like to implore all of you to walk out of a shitty job at least once this week. I did it last Friday and it was probably one of the most liberating things I’ve ever done both literally and figuratively. Anyway, not super crazy about most of the stuff coming out this week but there are a lot of releases so you’re sure to find something you like. Short intro this week. I don’t know. Fucking hangovers, man.
Stillbirth
Annihilation Of Mankind (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with Jehacktet, BRAINCASKET and Inquiring Blood
Listen: “Psychological Manipulation”
Asfar as heavy releases go this week, we’re a little strapped this week. Stillbirth are death metal with plenty of gurgly and guttural vocals. That being said, vocals are still varied enough to not become monotonous and guitars are riff-driven enough that the slams don’t get boring either. As a bonus, the album artwork for this record is fucking sick and hey, even the lyric video isn’t completely boring. What a time to be alive. If you’re looking for heavy, then look no further.
Mogwai
Kin (Soundtrack) (Rock Action/Temporary Residence Ltd.)
On a playlist with Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós and Arab Strap
Listen: “We’re Not Done”
The last time I wrote about Mogwai, I described them as such: “Mogwai are the kind of band that you listen to when you trip, end up thinking waaaaaay too hard about something, figure out a whole bunch of shit that you aren’t supposed to and then panic about until you come down and realize that you’re a different dude.” I know I’m lame. I just quoted myself. The reason this album is awesome is because Mogwai did the soundtrack for the movie Kin, which, from the trailer, looks to be a family friendly-ish movie about a kid who finds an advanced weapon and goes on the run with it while protecting his family. The movie drops today as well and although I can’t say I’m super interested in seeing it, it’s cool to see Mogwai doing such big things.
Helion Prime
Terror Of The Cybernetic Space Monster (AFM)
On a playlist with Graveshadow, Unleash the Archers and Visionatica
Listen: “Spectrum”
I made a guess when I first saw this band that it would either be the heaviest shit in the world or just another rock band with a cool name. And although describing Helion Prime as just another rock ban does them a disservice, I’d imagine that most of you will be quick to write these guys off since they aren’t heavy. However, you should really give them a chance. The guitars are atmospheric enough to differentiate the music enough from the generic crap you hear on the radio. This band won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but if you dabble in rock at all, Helion Prime are definitely worth a look.
Omnium Gatherum
The Burning Cold (N/A)
On a playlist with Dark Tranquility, Insomnium and Amon Amarth
Listen: “Refining Fire”
I’m torn on Omnium Gatherum. I really love the opening riff but I can’t decide whether or not I like the vocals, which seem to alternate back and forth between completely non-sensical and hollow echoes. I wouldn’t say that they’re bad but at times it feels like they just don’t gel with the rest of the music. However, I’m basing that off of basically one song and I know these guys have been around for quite a while so I’ll need to listen to them a bit more until I give my final verdict. Feel free to sound off in the comments if you know more about them than I. Not that any of you ever miss a chance to tell me how wrong I am.
Hellish
The Spectre Of Lonely Souls (Unspeakable Axe Records) listen
On a playlist with Mayhem, Darkthrone and All Hell
Listen: Full album
Do you ever listen to black metal and think man, I wish everything still sounded like it did back in Oslo during the 90s? If so, then Hellish are for you! Despitethe low production value, Hellish still manage to make something more listenable that most of the other stuff dropping today. Hellish are blackened thrash and pretty much everything that is expected to come with that does. Breakneck riffs, harsh vocals and even the occasional melodic solo.I’d love to see these guys live because I bet they’d bowl me right the fuck over. Fuck mainstream music amirite?
