Stream Voivod’s Cosmic New Single “Obsolete Beings”

Canadian space-age proggers Voivod are finally returning with their first full length in five years, titled The Wake. The first single from the record, “Obslote Beings,” embraces the band’s thrashy roots while also employing the signature Voivod twist.

This track sounds wildly Mastodonian to me (and I actually mean it this time). It’s so reminiscent of Mastodon’s newer work that I had to double check to make sure that I was, in fact, listening to Voivod — but once the chorus kicked in, it all fell into place. “Obsolete Beings” is a fantastic execution of modern progressive metal sounds fused with classic elements of thrash, an electrical surge that’ll leave you toasted. If this track is indicative of what the rest of The Wake has in store, then HOLY FUCK I CANNOT WAIT. Voivod’s capabilities are infinite, and as usual, it’ll be incredible to see what kinds of strange shit they can do with some already-established sounds.
