Check Out Polyphia’s New Hip Hop-Inspired Track “G.O.A.T.”
The press copy accompanying Polyphia’s new standalone single “G.O.A.T.” boasts that the song explores an “exciting new direction for the band.” The track was produced by Y2K (Killy, Yung Bans) and Judge (Migos & Mashmello, blackbear, Young Thug), whose credits aren’t usually ones you’d expect to see tied to a band that’s popular amongst the instrumental metal nerd crowd. So… how is it?
To start, you can definitely tell the track’s producers have a hand in the hip hop game; “G.O.A.T.” utilizes electronic-sounding drum samples instead of the band’s usual rock/metal sonic palette, making for a slow but hard-hitting beat that’s reminiscent of some of the aforementioned acts. That said, the song absolutely still sounds like Polyphia; I’d recognize those looping, melodic lead guitar lines anywhere. Together with the beat, it’s almost got a Ratatat vibe! I’m all for bands moving forward and trying new things so I’m very into this song, although I gather some portion of their fanbase will outright reject it on princuple… oh well, too bad! Onwards and upwards. I dig the Jake Woodbridge-directed video, too: very cool approach.
