Track Premiere: Split Cranium, “Ingurgitated Liquids”
If you’ve ever listened to Converge, Isis, Old Man Gloom, Sumac, Mamiffer or Circle (which we’ll assume you have if you’re reading this) — the past and current members of which make up Split Cranium — then you’re no doubt at least peripherally aware that all of those bands take influence from the hard-charging, straightforward riffage and attitude of d-beat and hardcore. Split Cranium is their homage to those roots.
The band is comprised of Aaron Turner (ex-Isis, Sumac, Old Man Gloom), Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders, Old Man Gloom), Tomi Leppänen (Circle, K-X-P), Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer, Mara) and Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle). Press play on “Ingurgitated Liquids” and you’ll get it right away: the band has channeled more of the same energy that made their debut (released six years ago) so fierce, but they’ve changed up the formula a bit this time, too. Explains Turner:
“We wanted to make a record that was less straightforward than the first one. Jussi loves melody and I love dissonance and noise, so that is probably the healthy creative contrast that made this record what it is.”
