Shit That Comes Out Today: March 30, 2018
I’m not sure why this became a popular marketing tool, but can we stop with the fucking song trailers? Not a studio teaser mind you, but the shit where labels release 30 seconds of a song to try and drive up some hype. Fucking stop it. Unless you’re a worldwide band, NOBODY gives a shit about a song trailer. You want to know what drives up hype for a new album? THE ACTUAL FUCKING MUSIC. Song trailers are the musical version of waiting in line to wait in a line. They’re the DMV of the music industry. Nobody likes going to the DMV so cut it the fuck out with “song trailers” and just release the whole damn thing. Now if you’ll excuse me, there are plenty of quality releases this week for you guys to listen to while I let my blood pressure go back to normal.
Napalm Death
Coded Smears And More Uncommon Slurs (Century Media)
On a playlist with Terrorizer, Brutal Truth and Repulsion
Listen: “Call That An Option?”
At this point, there’s not much to say about Napalm Death. The godfathers of grind have returned for what is probably their 329th album and if you don’t already like this band, then this album will not change that. However, Napalm Death do not care because their brand of chaos and insanity is not for the weak of heart and if you don’t like them, you’re probably a pussy. If you’ve read anything I’ve written during my nearly 3 years here at MetalSucks, then you know that I hate grindcore. I like Napalm Death and I like this album. You should too.
Primordial
Exile Amongst The Ruins (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with Moonsorrow, Mael Mórdha and Sólstafir
Listen: “Exile Amongst the Ruins”
Primordial are a somewhat difficult band to categorize because their sound is always changing. One minute they’re Irish black metal, the next they’re almost Mastodonish, and the next they’re a soft-spoken band with ambience that is unrivaled. To get a feel for Exile Amongst The Ruins, the only thing you can do is just listen to it. I feel like nearly every week there is a band that I get exposed to that has been around for 30-whatever years that I have somehow not listened to much, and this week it’s Primodial. But the good news is that, once again, Primordial’s sound isn’t static. So if you’re new, hop on board the Primordial train and let them take you to a different world.
Light The Torch (formerly Devil You Know)
Revival (Nuclear Blast Entertainment)
On a playlist with Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver and Bleeding Through
Listen: “Die Alone”
At first listen, “Die Alone” seems like nothing more than polished radio rock that doesn’t belong on here. You can be forgiven for that because I thought the same thing. However, upon closer inspection, the reason I am covering Light The Torch is simple: Howard Jones is in this band. Some of you may know him as Killswitch Engage’s former vocalist, AND you might know Light The Torch as a band that used to be called Devil You Know. So is it radio rockish? Yes, this song is at least. But god damnit it’s catchy and the fact that I’m listening to Howard Jones makes me feel a lot less guilty about that. Otherwise, this is exactly the same thing as Devil You Know. They just had to change their name.
Augury
Illusive Golden Age (The Artisan Era)
On a playlist with Teramobil, Neuraxis and Beyond Creation
Listen: “Carrion Tide”
Were you worried that there wouldn’t be anything super brutal that isn’t grind this week? Well, fear not because Canadian death metallers Augury have you covered. Although I don’t think I would quite consider these dudes melodic death metal, they have the perfect amount of melody to keep the songs interesting and avoid the grating, monotonous feeling that so many death metal bands fall prey to. It’s not the most dominant element of their music, but again, it keeps things interesting enough to keep you hooked from track to track. That’s more than a lot of bands can say, so if you want something a little different on the death metal spectrum, give Illusive Golden Age a spin.
Escape the Fate
I Am Human (Eleven Seven)
On a playlist with rawr XD, your first STD, and putting a toothpick under your toenail then kicking the wall
Listen: “I Am Human”
Let’s all give a round of applause to Escape the Fate. I’m serious! It takes balls to write so much horrible music over such a long period of time. After Ronnie Radke was fired from the band in 2008, I figured there was absolutely no way they could get any worse. But then they replaced him with the dildo from Blessthefall and the band effectively evolved from the musical equivalent of having the stomach flu to the musical equivalent of your dad giving you syphillis in your asshole and not calling the next day. This time around, Escape the Fate have written the most basic “love yourself” anthem for 13-year-old scene girls who AREN’T JUST GOING THROUGH A FUCKING PHASE, MOM, that I have ever heard. So whatever, Escape the Fate. Pretend you’re deep. Pretend you care about your fans loving themselves. I could write better songs by shoving a guitar string up my urethra and pulling it out of my mouth. Your music is shit and all of you look like someone covered Mötley Crüe in mayonaise, microwaved them for 3 hours and somehow managed to give them even worse haircuts.
