Reckless Speculation: on Which “Popular Summer Festival Tour” Will Unearth Appear?
Two takeaways from guitarist Buz McGrath’s new interview with the Talk About the Passion podcast:
- Unearth will be hitting the studio sometime around March to record their first new album in four years.
- Unearth “are confirmed for a popular summer festival tour,” which McGrath declined to name ’cause, duh, “it’s not announced” yet.
It’s the second of these two revelations I want to discuss. Not because I don’t care that the band is making a new album; I just don’t know what we can say about it without actually having heard any of it. On the other hand, we can make some educated guesses as to which “popular summer festival tour” has booked the band.
In fact, there aren’t even that many choices to consider and weigh. Without Ozzfest, Mayhem Fest, or Sounds of the Underground, there are really only two metal-friendly summer festival tours left: Summer Slaughter and Warped Tour (and after this summer, no more Warped Tour).
Warped Tour seems like the slightly more obvious choice of the two. Unearth’s hardcore influence fits with the festival’s punk aesthetic, and Summer Slaughter tends to veer more towards death metal and deathcore. But if it was Summer Slaughter, I don’t think anyone would, like, shit their pants with surprise.
Which of the two festivals do you think booked Unearth? Is there a third festival my weed-addled brain is forgetting? Discuss in the comments section below.
