Video Premiere: Fractal Universe, “Scar Legacy of Hatred”

French progressive death metal unit Fractal Universe released their debut album Engram of Decline back in April of this year, but as is inevitable in the internet age of a zillion bands, we missed its release. Shame on us!

The band’s new video for the album track “Scar Legacy of Hatred,” which we’re premiering here today, is our first introduction to the band… and wow, what a way to be indoctrinated.

Let’s start with the music since Fractal Universe are likely new to most of you as well: progressive death and tech-death are both appropriate labels with equal parts Gojira and Psycroptic. Slow, plodding riffs and pick scrapes mesh with blazing fast guitar passages for the perfect synthesis of modern death metal. Visually, their new clip is absolutely stunning: the animation style is completely unique, and metalheads will certainly find the video’s dark subject matter relevant. Here’s what the band has to say about it:

“With the birth of their conscience, humans become aware of their own finitude. This is the origin of the fundamental fear of death. This ever-present fear will eventually be interiorized and reappear in disguised forms throughout our lives, creating an ambivalent relationship with the ‘other,’ and leading to the delusive shelter of spirituality.”
