Exclusive Track Premiere: Great American Ghost’s “Ann Arbor (Be Safe)”
This is our third Great American Ghost premiere in as many years (2015, 2016). Can you tell we really fucking love this band?
In our defense, Great American Ghost are severely fucking lovable: evidence suggests that the Boston quartet has discovered the secret equation for writing uniformly-excellent stampeding, corrosive metallic-hardcore. Take, for example, their latest song, “Ann Arbor (Be Safe).” It’s got a rubbery swagger and an anthemic chorus, both of which serve to suck the listener in… but it’s also savage as fuck, propelled by drums like cannons, bass like a creeping anaconda, guitars like wood chippers, and vocals like hot coals. In other words, it’s everything you want in metal-tinged hardcore music.
And as icing on the cake, frontman Ethan Harrison’s lyrics will serve as an ice cold bucket of water any romantic misconceptions about being a tour musician. Calling the track “easily the most personal on the record,” Harrison says the song is “basically about how wildly selfish it is to choose to tour when there are people in your life that are relying on you emotionally, and also acknowledging the choice to ignore that.” No wonder the dude sounds so tortured.
