WSOU Picks of the Week: Ensiferum, Paradise Lost, and Wintersun
Seton Hall University’s WSOU radio is the only all-metal, all-the-time station currently broadcasting in the US, and as been a force in metal for DECADES. It’s also streamable online from anywhere in the world! Each week, the staff of WSOU shares their picks for the heaviest of the heavy, as well as the station’s charts for that week, right here on MetalSucks. Enjoy:
Ensiferum – “For Those About to Fight For Metal” (Garren L.)
Sometimes you just need metal that you can ride into battle to, and that is where bands like Ensiferum come in. This song gallops along as it builds up to the vocals, which feature that not-so-clean, rough sound. The song also features the folk metal standard sing-along chorus that can’t help but lift your spirits. Although this track hasn’t blown my mind, it does lift my spirits and has raised my excitement over the prospect of a new Ensiferum album.
Paradise Lost – “The Longest Winter” (Katie W.)
Paradise Lost put forth their best and heaviest foot with their newest single, “The Longest Winter.” As usual, the UK-based band offers no shortage of thick, metallic sounds or excitement as demonstrated by the otherworldly guitar orchestration and the ghastly screams and roars of frontman Nick Holmes. The opening grind of the guitar sets the hulking tone for the rest of the “The Longest Winter,” while the staggered pace allows for a more casual headbang. Holmes’ deep, superhuman voice drives the piece along to its calming end.
Wintersun – “Awaken From The Dark Slumber (Spring)” (Dylan G.)
It’s finally here, guys! Wintersun dropped their hyped-up album and it… somehow met all expectations. I don’t mean that I expected less from these guys, but when you build the sort of hype train that this album had going for it, it becomes bound for disappointment. You can bet your sweet bippy that WSOU is spinning these gargantuan tracks throughout the day. We wouldn’t be dedicating that sort of air time to new music unless it’s this good.
