WSOU Picks of the Week: River Black, Municipal Waste, Alestorm

Seton Hall University’s WSOU radio is the only all-metal, all-the-time station currently broadcasting in the US, and as been a force in metal for DECADES. It’s also streamable online from anywhere in the world! Each week, the staff of WSOU shares their picks for the heaviest of the heavy, as well as the station’s charts for that week, right here on MetalSucks. Enjoy:

River Black – “Low” (Dylan G.)

I could write a couple sentences about this cool new band and their cool new album… or I could just let the song speak for itself. Because everyone knows a good press release is what sells an album. This song fuckin’ rips.

Municipal Waste – “Slime and Punishment” (Kaitie W.)

For as much as the Commonwealth of Virginia has produced some of the world’s eminent thinkers and statesmen — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison — it has never produced such explosive musical output as now with the latest work of Municipal Waste. “Slime and Punishment” is not only thrash’s high-water mark in this century, but it is easily one of the grander moments in all of thrash metal history. The easy comparisons to Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, Megadeth et al notwithstanding, Municipal Waste bring a perfectly modern production value to their output that mere imitators of the genre could never even hope to approach. “Slime and Punishment” may carry a comedic face-value, but the physical damage to the listener’s spine and ears elevates the band’s production to master level execution. I would say more, but I desperately need to ice my neck at this point.

Alestorm – “Mexico” (Joe R.)

Ahoy, matey! Come get your pirate metal fix with some new Alestorm! Their new track “Mexico” from the album No Grave But The Sea is filled with the classic elements of any Alestorm song; killer riffs, awesome keyboard parts and an overall good time. Make sure you catch them at this year’s Warped Tour with a cold pint in hand!
