WSOU Picks of the Week: Decrepit Birth, Iced Earth, Alestorm
Seton Hall University’s WSOU radio is the only all-metal, all-the-time station currently broadcasting in the US, and as been a force in metal for DECADES. Decrepit Birth – “Epigenetic Triplicty” (Garren L.)
A little over a year ago Decrepit Birth’s drummer, Samus Paulicelli, stated in one of his YouTube videos that his band would not be the next Necrophagist when it comes to releasing new music, and last week the band finally dropped their first new track in years and it rips. This song is technical death metal at its finest, while the guitar and vocals are top notch, it’s Paulicelli’s precise, brutal drumming that make this track stand out. Decrepit Birth’s new album, Axis Mundi, is one of my most anticipated albums of 2017.
Iced Earth – “Seven Headed Whore” (Katie W.)
Jon Schaffer may have found the ultimate application for a blast beat outside of ’90s black metal and he matches it with the height of his guitar orchestration to produce what is easily one of Iced Earth’s finest moments, “Seven Headed Whore.” I’m not quite sure what the going rate of a seven headed whore is, but after listening to their most recent release I’m convinced it would be a bargain at any price, just like this track. Further in-depth analysis is unnecessary, and I feel complete justification in proclaiming this to be the finest of any of Schaffer’s many contributions to metal.
Alestorm – “Fucked With An Anchor” (Dylan G.)
Last fall I had the chance to go backstage to interview Alestorm’s bassist, Garreth. The leather pants and boxed wine in the corner only led me to believe that he was part of a very classy bunch. “Fucked With An Anchor” shows that Alestorm can take their sound from keytar-laden metal to a shit-talking, peg-legged, Dropkick-Murphys vibe. This direction has resulted in a whimsical diddy from their new album, No Grave But The Sea.
