3Teeth’s “Shutdown” Sounds More Like Nine Inch Nails Than Nine Inch Nails Does These Days

Nine Inch Nails’ recent EP, Not the Actual Events, is the first NIN release I’ve ever found disappointing. Trent Reznor should have released it under some other name/brand. I know that suggestion may sound silly, given that Reznor is Nine Inch Nails so in a way anything he does is NIN music. But at the end of the day, Nine Inch Nails became Nine Inch Nails by writing great songs; Events not only lacks these, but it doesn’t even seem to be trying for ’em. In other words, it’s not like Reznor plum forgot to write a catchy, anthemic hook — that’s not what he was going for in the first place. Thus, I don’t think it should have been labeled ‘Nine Inch Nails.’

3Teeth’s new single “Shutdown,” meanwhile, sounds like a B-side from The Downward Spiral or Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar. If someone played it for you and told you it had been recorded in 1996, you would absolutely believe it. The great tragedy of its existence is that it will never appear on the soundtrack for a low-budget, angst-filled action flick like The Crow or Spawn. I’m saying if you disliked Events as much as I did, this will scratch that itch for ya.

Check out “Shutdown” via the below music video, which debuted earlier today on Metal Injection. The song is the de facto title track from 3Teeth’s new album, <shutdown.exe>, which comes out May 19 on OMF Records. Pre-order it here.
