Metallica Fans Upset Over Insane Ticket Scalping Prices on Upcoming European Tour

Just a couple of weeks ago Metallica announced the European portion of their “WorldWired” tour, set to take place between September 2017 and May 2018. As is par for the course these days with high-profile events, several of the shows sold out almost immediately after going on sale this past Friday, March 24th, and within minutes thousands of tickets were available on secondary market websites for hugely inflated prices, scooped up by scalpers running highly efficient bulk ticket-buying rings.

According to International Business Times, Metallica fans are particularly upset that so many tickets ended up on Get Me In, a secondary market website owned by Ticketmaster:

“Tickets for Metallica’s show at London’s O2 Arena on 22 October have almost gone but a small batch are currently still available for around £200 ($249) with the original prices at £50-£85. Some hopeful ticket-buyers on social media complained that tickets for other shows were priced for as much as £2,000.

“Expressing their shock at the prices, one unlucky fan tweeted: ‘Absolute disgrace how @GETMEIN and the likes can resell tickets and get away with it. #Metallica,’ while another agreed, writing: ’95 bucks to see Metallica…. let’s be honest that a disgrace.’”

The UK government recently announced plans that would make it illegal to buy tickets for concerts and sporting events in bulk, although that legislation has yet to become law. The US recently banned ticket bots, but it remains to be seen what if any effect that has had on secondary market scalping.
