The Ruins Of Beverast

One of today’s must-hear bands is The Ruins Of Beverast, the author of 2013’s most instantly memorable extreme metal album. This shit is weird and culty, repetitive and dynamic, the soundtrack to blank stares and rows of people seated on a basement floor. If TRoB dude Alexander Von Meilenwald had welcomed me into the studio for an early peak at these two new cuts, I would’ve lovingly shook him by the shoulders while bellowing “You’re so weird, it’s scary!!!” Put it that way. Stay for the Pink Floyd cover.

Kreator
Gods Of Violence (Nuclear Blast)

You may look on Kreator with love, for they’re one of the most memorable, most extreme thrash bands of the ’80s. Yet it’s also possible that it’s been a while since a Kreator album has connected with you. Their peers have integrated post-2000 metal with their chops and songwriting, growing bigger and badder in the bargain. Meanwhile, Kreator kinda sounds like Avenged Sevenfold.

For all its awesomeness, Kjeld’s 2015 album Skym is a bit cruel. Not in the way that it seems to pulse and heave within its neat confines, not in the way it seems to place a cold hand on your chest from seeming miles away. Nay, the cruelty is that Skym flies by and concludes before you’re ready. Even though it’s an hour long. That’s why we’ve been extra sweaty in our anticipation of an EP, split, or new album for 20 months. Three new songs? That’ll do! For now.

Stephen Pearcy
Smash (Frontiers)

The narrative of Ratt is one of hair metal’s most annoying. Just in the past few years, singer Stephen Pearcy quit a couple of weeks before a tour in 2012; in 2013, drummer Bobby Blotzer enlisted some low-priced help and took his “Ratt” on the road to much derision and legal action; 2015 brought a band called Ratt’s Juan Croucier because why not; and here in 2017, the date approaches of the first date by a Ratt staffed by Pearcy, Croucier, and guitarist Warren DeMartini. Croucier had been coaxed back after a two-decade holdout a bit before Pearcy bailed, so high are our hopes now for a rad Juan-powered Ratt album to match 2010’s classic Infestation. Pearcy’s solid new solo album is already a big step toward that!

Did you hear Insane Vesper’s 2016 album LayiL? I remember listening to half of it thinking that I was listening to a new album by a big hyped underground band — I clicked “play” on the wrong thing, doy — and freaking out that it was so decisive, fluent, and awesome. I thought that the weirdly beloved band totally got their shit together! Then, when the knowledge arrived that its creators were in fact Insane Vesper, my disbelief dissolved, for bands with the profile of tiny Insane Vesper release records that rip that hard on the reg. You read STCOT so you know this. Crank it up!!!

If you’ve attended any of the first few shows on the Mayhem/Inquisition/Black Anvil tour, then perhaps you spent a few minutes after the show muttering to yourself that extreme metal is the spine of all time and space in 2017. Its best bands masterfully vibrate a roomful of random people onto the same wavelength, the same brooding, beautiful chord, the same thought in a few hundred heads. It’s a look into the darkness, the ideas that our minds have yet to grasp, the contours we can’t detect — by a few hundred pairs of eyes for a few hours. It’s sharing something more than a drink or a laugh, it’s a wave of unseen heat, and a reminder that we’ll find contentment in total suffering.
