“Mexico” by Danny Worsnop is No “Africa” by Toto

I’m sure not by coincidence, Danny Wornsop’s reunion with Asking Alexandria has been perfectly timed to help the vocalist promote his solo album, The Long Road Home. But if that album’s new single, “Mexico,” is any indication, then only the most loyal AA fans will give a shit.

This song sounds like it was recorded by the support act for Jimmy Buffet’s next tour. It’s about going on vacation to the titular country, features lyrics like “watching señoritas dancing on the beaches,” and espouses the joys of “a nice, cold bottle of Bud.” The whole thing is likely to kickstart menopause in women and men alike.

And, hey, if you’re into that kind of music, great. I’m sure this will suit you. But the video is still ill-conceived. It’s got enough T&A to be a Mötley Crüe video from the 80s. It’s got the year’s creepiest wink. It’s got Amish Mitch Lucker in an American flag banana hammock.

I cannot for the life of me figure out who this video thinks Worsnop’s target audience is. Young men? They won’t listen to this shit. Old men? They’ll wonder why Worsnop is surrounded by hooligans. Women of any age? They don’t wanna watch young frat bruhs doing body shots and groping girls with big fake boobs. Dead people? The good news is, they can’t object or turn it off, and the bad news is, they don’t buy a lot of records. So who is this meant for?

The Long Road Home comes out February 17 on the same label that released Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious, Slaughter of the Soul, and Nihility.
