Listen to Opeth’s “Sorceress” Remixed with Amazing-Sounding Programmed Drums by Toontrack

Toontrack’s Metal Month is here (almost), meaning that the Swedish recording software company will be releasing a whole new slate of products geared specifically towards metal players throughout November. We’ve also got some very cool content in store for you here at MetalSucks — just you wait, you’re gonna be pumped when you learn what it is.

As a sort of lead-in to Metal Month before it officially kicks off, Toontrack has released the “Big Rock Drums EZX” expansion pack for EZdrummer, which boasts five complete drum kits “all capturing the raw, thunderous tone of classic ‘70s hard rock.” And what better way to demo those sounds than with Opeth, who have basically become a ’70s hard rock band?

Toontrack obtained the original stems and multi-track drum session of Opeth’s new song “Sorceress” and sound-replaced the drums using tones from the Big Rock Drums EZX. Press play below to hear the results; it’s all the same original source material but with new drums, and those drums high in the mix so you can hear them up close.

The drum tones in the Big Rock Drums EZX were played by Rival Sons’ drummer Michael Miley and recorded by Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Europe, Zac Brown Band). Everything was recorded at Cobb’s Low Country Sound Studio in Nashville, and delivers “the massive, reverberant and roaring type [of drums], tailored for big rock songs.”
