Tortorum’s second album, 2014’s Katabasis, belongs in every collection. Count it a master class in both blistering bestial black metal and its cousin, mid-tempo marching BM, all droning guitars, echoing voices, and maybe-not-quite-ever-arriving chaos. Now a trio, Tortorum vaults back to the front of our minds with a hearty EP that again achieves the feat of both soothing the insane and discomfiting the steady. Katabasis was no fluke. Crank it up.

To convince your loved ones of your harmlessness, you could explain that metal has the same ratio of nice people to fuckwits as every other segment of society. You’d point to a totally normal heavy album in your collection and state that Mastodon (or Iron Maiden or Gojira) is pop music played way heavier. That’s all. But to convince your loved ones of your all-encompassing megalomania and baby-eating Argentan psychopathy, you’d crank Cardinal Wyrm. Metal from Earth’s core. Not to be confused with Conqueror Worm.

The members of Fvnerals definitely landed on the correct name. You just know it after about ten minutes of their desolate new album Wounds. And you can tell they knew it too, for they deign to use a “v” in place of a “u” to distinguish their band from at least a few other Funeralses. We must be called Fvnerals, they told each other, No matter the spelling!! Again, they were totally right. This is movrning.

You may be incredibly amused by the thought of an extreme metal band taking a stage in some darkened little venue and announcing in a brutal voice that they’re called Polyp Dick and tonight the audience is about to be “defying [breath] the [pause] metastasisssss!!!! [snare snare snare snare]” I mean, anybody would spit out laughing at that. Then Polyptych would keep playing, and everyone would get the name right then immediately agree that the band could be called Shart Face yet we’d all buy merch.

Axl Rosenberg on the awesome new album by an awesome band that we’ve been following for years: “The best word to describe their music is ‘immersive’ — or, perhaps more accurately … ‘submersive.’ I mean, their band photo looks like they’ve been pulled out of quicksand just in time.
