Clutch Suffer Frontier Justice in “A Quick Death in Texas” Video
Clutch’s Psychic Warfare was easily one of my Best Albums of 2015, as it perfectly captured the band’s mix of raging muscle rock and esoterica hippie jam music. But some of its best moments were its more traditional rock songs, one of which was “A Quick Death in Texas,” a countrified bad luck anthem that channeled Eddie Harris as much as ZZ Top.
The band has now released a video for “A Quick Death in Texas,” and it’s a pretty straightforward cowboy story. Frontman Neil Fallon plays a poorly-mannered gunslinger who proceeds to get himself into all kinds of trouble in full period garb. It’s fun in a lot of ways, but I can’t help wonder if maybe they could’ve taken things one step further, like they did in the “X-Ray Visions” video. Maybe instead of telling us stories about Neil’s various exploits, they could’ve gone sensory overload with the western death imagery.
Anyway, enough yammering, here’s “A Quick Death in Texas.” Clutch’s Psychic Warfare is out now on Weathermaker, and you can hear Fallon talk about Clutch, his side projects, and more on this week’s episode of the MetalSucks podcast.
