Listen: Myrkur in a Mausoleum in Concert

The best live albums document extra-special concerts. For example, a hall-of-fame mega-band’s first ever visit to South America after 30 years. Or, metal’s greatest live band during their four-night stay at an L.A. arena in the glorious mid-’80s. Aerosmith wasted off their asses in their 20s. And now, an awesome black metal artist backed by a girls choir in an above-ground tomb. Yes!!!

That’s the newly announced EP by Myrkur. Titled Mausoleum, its tracks are “reinventions” of seven jams from last year’s best metal album, the awesome song that popped up a few months later on an Adult Swim thing, one from her debut EP, and a Bathory cover (hint: it’s from Hammerheart). Depending on the source, Mausoleum bears either one or two new songs, but the track list doesn’t show any. And it was recorded last year at a freaking mausoleum.

It’s acoustic enough to be mistaken for non-metal, but you know what they say about ‘the swing of the pendulum.’ Maybe this just sets up the next full Myrkur album to be extremely fast, insane black metal. For now, M‘s fifth track is Mausoleum‘s second — and the first track we’re hearing (below). Its other performer is that dude Håvard formerly of Ulver. Crank it up!Myrkur’s Mausoleum EP with the Norwegian Girls Choir is out August 19 via Relapse. Pre-order here and here.
