REVOCATION’S NEW ALBUM MIGHT JUST BLOW YOUR MIND WHEN YOU HEAR IT

One week ago today Axl ran a post about Boston up-and-comers Revocation, quoting Cosmo Lee’s high regard for the band and asking the opinions of the MS faithful. “The Next Great Metal Band”? I’d heard the two new songs they’d posted on their MySpace page and I really dug them, but that’s certainly a lofty claim for a band whose Relapse Records debut hasn’t even dropped yet.

That was until Relapse sent me a stream of the entire new album. HOLY FUCKING SHIT, YOU GUYS!!! HOLY SHIT!@&*#$%^&*@$^

Existence is Futile combines the best elements of everything and the worst elements of absolutely nothing from today’s metal scene. The chops, the songs, the arrangements, the production, the mix — all there. The guitar solos are ridiculously nuanced and well-crafted (never show-offy), the songs instantly memorable, the arrangements grand and epic, the production and mix absolutely perfect, clear and concise without overdoing it — you can even hear the bass clearly, for chrissakes. When was the last time you could clearly hear the bass tone on a modern metal record? I can’t even say. And there’s none of Ziltoid’s so-called “weedily weedily,” — brutal tech-death, this is not — it’s a sound all its own. Shit, I sound like a fucking press release now. I’m gonna stop. You can listen to a couple of new songs on the above widget, but honestly I don’t think those two choices showcase what the album is all about.

In any case you guys are in for a fucking treat when this album comes out on September 29th. Keep your eyes peeled for a cool tour this fall as well. I’m so into this band that I’ve even been watching their in-studio video blogs, which labels these days tend to pump out with regularity but rarely end up being very interesting.
