WSOU Picks of the Week: Gojira, Suidakra, Beartooth
Seton Hall University’s WSOU radio is the only all-metal, all-the-time station currently broadcasting in the US, and as been a force in metal for DECADES. It’s also streamable online from anywhere in the world! Each week, the staff of WSOU shares their picks for the heaviest of the heavy, as well as the station’s charts for that week, right here on MetalSucks. Enjoy:
Gojira – “Silvera” (Megan S.)
“Silvera” is the second single released by Gojira from their upcoming album, Magma. Although this track is shorter than most of Gojira’s previous ones, the song is as technical and powerful as you’d expect. It’s high energy and features thought-provoking lyrics for which the band has become known, and gives me even higher expectations for the rest of the album. Magma will be released on June 17th.
Suidakra – “The Hunter’s Horde” (Garren L.)
Suidakra are a band that always seem to be changing their sound. At times I’m not sure if I should describe them as melodic death metal, folk metal, Celtic folk metal, or even as black metal. With their new track “The Hunter’s Horde,” the band has created a sound very reminiscent of Children of Bodom, but with hints of folk metal too. This mixture makes this track flawless and has sparked a further curiosity for me to listen to Suidakra’s upcoming album, The Realms of Odoric.
Beartooth – “Hated” (Nick D.)
We’re still two weeks away from the release of Beartooth’s sophomore effort Aggressive, but the band has already released almost half of the album. While this takes away from the excitement of hearing the album all the way through for the first time when it finally comes out, it does bring satisfaction hearing the singles that Caleb Shomo, frontman and the mastermind behind Beartooth, has worked so hard on. The fourth track to be released, “Hated,” is the band’s most “radio-friendly” song, but that is in no way a bad thing. The track features Shomo’s clean singing with only a hint of his angry side, finally coming out towards the end during a really bouncy breakdown that will kill your neck from headbanging whiplash. This one’s a lot like “In Between” from the band’s 2014 debut album Disgusting, which featured all clean singing and was pushed as a radio single. Beartooth stick to their roots here, but that’s exactly what the doctor ordered.
