Orbs (feat. Members of Between the Buried and Me, Cradle of Filth, Fear Before the March of Flames) Release New Track “Exploded Birds”
All the members of Between the Buried and Me have interests outside of metal they pursue when they aren’t busy with their day jobs. Vocalist Tommy Rogers has his Thomas Giles solo project, for example, while guitarist Paul Waggoner is a football nut who scribbles his thoughts down for MetalSucks. But bassist Dan Briggs is probably the busiest of the bunch; he’s managed to find quite a bit of time for Trioscapes these past few years, his jazz-fusion side project, and now he’s finally gotten back to Orbs after a very long layoff.
In writing this post, I came to the realization it’s possible I’ve never listened to Orbs before. And assuming a bunch of you haven’t either, here’s how I’d describe them: like BTBAM, but if BTBAM wrote very dramatic Broadway showtunes. If that sounds weird, yeah… it’s pretty fucking weird! Adam Fisher of Fear Before the March of Flames lends his quirky, emotional vocals to the band — I’m guessing these will rub a lot of metalheads the wrong way, but I dig them in this context — while Ashley Ellyllon, formerly of Abigail Williams and Cradle of Filth, carries the melodies with her keyboards and Briggs holds down the low end. A drummer isn’t listed on any of the band’s sites, but Matt Lynch (also of Trioscapes) played on the band’s 2014 seven-inch, so perhaps he’s on board again here (although if he was, they’d probably mention it).
Check out “Exploded Birds” below. It’s all over the map stylistically, and completely different at the end than how it starts. New album Past Life Regression comes out July 15th and can be pre-ordered here.
