Sh*t That Comes Out Today: January 29, 2016
Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we usually stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up.
·
Spektr
The Art To Disappear (Agonia)
On a playlist with: Awe, Crown, Sigh
Listen The Art To Disappear full stream (here)
Technically speaking, all music is different — even slamcore bands exhibit some variety under the microscope. Don’t worry, Spektr is not a slamcore band, and really, they’re a whatever-comes-to-mind band. We hear (and toss around) the word “experimental” a lot. Here’s the one-line editorial: you’re not experimental until you create something so obnoxiously left-field that only a mindful few are bound to enjoy it. So are you one of those folk?

Chthe’ilist
Le Dernier Crépuscule (Profound Lore)
On a playlist with: Crematory, Ripping Corpse, Pestilence
Listen Le Dernier Crépuscule full stream (here)
Five years from demo to debut, this yet-another-band-with-an-unpronounceable-name band plays the long game. What does that say about said band? First, that they have patience, that almighty virtue demanded by many and practiced by few. Also passion, because stickin’ with it sometimes proves difficult (life lesson). Patience and passion ain’t going to win death metal awards, though — luckily Clee’tus is as raunchy and debauched as they should be.
·
Forndom
Dauðra Dura (Nordvis)
On a playlist with: Kauan, Opeth (quiet), Celeste (quiet)
Listen Dauðra Dura full stream (here)
Do you do anything in excess? Of course not, but you’ve read about how tolerance works. Same goes for heavy music — no matter how much you think you can tolerate, there’s a point when your brain vomits and you’re left there, a helpless burbling mass of flesh and fat. Okay! This is why there is quiet music for metalheads, normally it involves some kind of reflection on death. Luckily, Dauðra Dura is some kind of reflection on death.
·
Lethal Steel
Legion Of The Night (High Roller)
On a playlist with: post-Maiden, Honda Civic
Listen “Sirius” (here)
Lethal. STEEL. Just let the words slip out of your mouth, but be sure to e-n-u-n-c-i-a-t-e . This steel, it’s lethal. That’s some — *squints eyes doggedly* — lethal steel. This pointless fucking analysis begs the question: can’t lethal steel can be just about anything from a Hattori Hanzō sword to a fast-moving Honda Civic? This is not to insinuate that a Honda Civic is more interesting than a brand-new album by a band named Lethal Steel.
·
Cult Of Luna / The Old Wind
Råångest split EP (Pelagic)
On a playlist with: Neurosis, Pelican, The Ocean
Listen “Last Will And Testament” (here) Wooden Scythe” (here)
You can’t exactly mud-wrestle with Cult Of Luna. Even with their surge in popularity they have not strayed from the true progressive’s path. As for The Old Wind (grandpa fart jokes aside), they have members of The Ocean on roster. Now, how can you mud-wrestle with both COL and TOW? You can’t, all you can do is listen to Råångest, it’s already won.
·
Toothgrinder
Nocturnal Masquerade (Spinefarm)
On a playlist with: seeing your dentist
Listen “The House (That Fear Built)” (here) “Diamonds For Gold” (here) “Blue” (here) “Lace & Anchor” (here)
Toothgrinder plays live like people who stabbed their way out of the womb, horns-out. Few bands can even respond to their intensity — actually, speaking of this new album, few bands who are so inclined toward “nu-metal-ness” can maintain face when subject to unfair comparison. Nocturnal Masquerade is arguably not the most “energized” thing Toothgrinder has written, but two things on this point: 1) They’re saving the energy for the show, 2) Who gives a shit, this shit rocks, plus it came out today!
