Better Than Bonfires and Smores: Now You Can Go to Summer Camp with Periphery
While thousands of folks watched Wet Hot American Summer and laughed hysterically — ’cause it’s funny, duh — what most of you probably didn’t realize is that, for a small subset of liberal Northeast Jews (not exclusively Jews, but definitely a lot of Jews) the original film and the new TV series completely nailed the summer camp experience. From super-steamy one-day flings to the hippie camp director to the Israeli counselor to the Burp King of Westchester, Wet Hot American Summer IS summer camp with only a touch of hyperbole.
Going to summer camp with Periphery this coming August probably won’t be quite like bunking up with Michael Showalter and Amy Poehler — although both guitarist / MetalSucks troll Misha Mansoor and drummer Matt Halpern rep the Jew side appropriately — but it sure promises to be hella fun. The six Peripherians will be hosting the “Periphery Summer Jam” between July 26th through 29th at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY (in the Castskills, near Woodstock), the same location Animals as Leaders hosted a similar session in 2012. The long weekend promises that Periphery will let attendees into their inner world, including classes about their songwriting, studio approach, touring and the general trials and tribulations that come with being in a band, as well as video game competitions, gourmet food, bonfires, private performances, jam sessions and just general hanging out. And who knows, maybe you’ll meet the djenty nerd of your dreams and have a steamy fling of your own while you’re at it.
