Sh*t That Comes Out Today: September 18, 2015
Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the new Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!
·
Moon
Render Of The Veils (Moribund)
On a playlist with: Planetshine, Earth And Pillars, Darkspace
Listen Render Of The Veils full stream (here)
Thanks to its amateur tendencies, Render Of The Veils sounds true as fuck. Moon writes spacey black metal more tr00 and eviler than its counterparts — substituting cosmic bewilderment for gates-of-hell shit. No mystery is lost, though. No journey wasted, i.e. they did take the path less traveled! It’s a lengthy album and thus requires patience, or a healthy concoction of nootropics, or just plain ol’ patience (got any of that patience to spare)?
·
Anfinnsaas
Anfinnsaas (Autumnsongs)
On a playlist with: Castevet + Walknut
Listen Anfinnsaas full stream (here)
What happens when your entire fucking structure crumbles away and all that’s left is your pulsing, bleeding core?! Well, An-Fin’s-Ass gets all deconstructive and jammy on their self-titled. Postmodern, in a sense, but not annoyingly so — you can jam along to these tracks without getting completely lost. But getting kind of lost is kind of the point. Also these Norwegian dudes were (probably) highhh af, which works too, yo.
·
Bleed Someone Dry
Post Mortem | Veritas (Fire Was Born)
On a playlist with: Thy Shart Is Murder, Whitechapel, Fit For An Autopsy
Listen Post Mortem | Veritas full stream (here)
Take the nerdiness out of technical deathcore! By integrating feels from harder-core influences, Post Mortem | Veritas actually sounds fluent instead of dorky and repetitious. There are breakdown moments and crowd-pleasers, but not just to put on a show. Das vocals are mean and tough, the drums are reigned in when necessary, e.g. on “Doom and Gloom,” etc., i.e. 7/10, would listen to again, but next week.
·
The Black Dahlia Murder
Abysmal (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Job For A Cowboy, The Faceless, All Shall Perish
Listen Abysmal full stream (here)
I’ve never been the hugest fan of TBDM, except for this song, and so it’s no shock that Abysmal doesn’t cause stirring on me insides. But there’s some Element #666 cooked into TBDM and their records: they’ve really never done any wrong. And true fans truly eat that shit up. Loyalty goes a long way, but maybe it hinders progression. Anyway, Abysmal is a well-rounded, well-executed, super-smooth, super-modern death/black-metal album. Haters may be inclined to say that it feels purposeless and just a faster/harder version of their previous.
·
Christian Mistress
To Your Death (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Lucifer, Ghost, Iron Maiden
Listen To Your Death full stream (here)
What sounds like rock ‘n’ roll to us today probably sounded metal as fůk way back when. What will future people think? And that’s the point of Christian Mistress: to show us young fucking morons how it used to be, blah blah blah, blah. To Your Death is heavy in the old school way: over-overdriven solos, a slap of Britishness, and the faintest dash of darkness. I’d like to imagine that these dudes (and lady) put on a massively killer live show!
·
In Twilight’s Embrace
The Grim Muse (Arachnophobia)
On a playlist with: One Master, Akhlys, Wovoka
Listen The Grim Muse full stream (here)
Never judge a fish by its face! With a name like In Twilight’s Embrace you’d expect some I See Stars-esque bullshit. But instead you get artisan-quality, short-form, kickass blackened death metal. How blackened? Quite blackened. How death-y? Quite death-y. How good. Quite good. No, really good actually. Your homework for this lesson: Spin the fourth track “A Wolf I Remain” (lol naming) and the penultimate track “Gravitate Towards The Unknown,” then come back to the comments section with fresh ideas for a completely sensible, academic conversation.
